Sustained Investigation 

How can I combine photography with graphic design and illustrations to show aspects of cultures? Exploring my own Hawaiian and Japanese identity as well as studying Spanish language and culture has made a lasting impact on my life. Guided by my interest in these cultures and varying art mediums I explored cultural traditions, cultural misrepresentation, the journey behind finding your own cultural identity, and eventually how a family’s identity can change from generation to generation.

Initially, I used hand drawn elements to depict parts of my own Hawaiian/Japanese culture(1,2). I then explored traditions outside my culture(3-6), experimenting with typefaces and graphic design elements(5,6). I also focused on using new art mediums, editing techniques, and styles of portraiture to illustrate the journey behind understanding your own cultural identity(7-12). Finally, I experimented with collages(14-15) to explore and revise my original question to include how identities can change over generations(14) and how cultures can be misrepresented(15).
